SOLASAFE – Sheeting Information

PLANNING

Solasafe sheeting is available in a range of colours and profiles to suit your home and surroundings. Clear sheets transmit some 90% of glorious daylight; see the light and heat transmission tables for the percentage applicable to other colours. In cooler climates, clear sheeting allows good heat transmission, while in hot climates, tinted sheets provide a reduction in transmitted heat as well as reduced glare. Often tinted sheets are used to blend in with existing colour schemes or other roofing. If new sheeting is to be used with existing polycarbonates, please check your colour before installation as some minor variations may occur.

Before you order materials and commence building, please check the spanning table below, which will give you the maximum distance between battens and purlins. The sheet’s length and sheet coverage table will help you calculate how many sheets you require.

AMPELITE – SOLASAFE

INSTALLATION GUIDE

Solasafe is fixed and flashed on similar principles as steel roofing. For Solasafe profiles Corrugate and Greca, the minimum fall is 5 degrees. For Solasafe 5 rib profile, the minimum fall is 3 degrees. Start by fixing the first sheet at the end farthermost from the usual wind direction. If end laps are necessary, start at the bottom corner.

Solasafe is UV-protected on one side only. Please read the label on the sheet before installation and check each sheet label thoroughly to ensure that the UV-protected surface faces the correct way. Sheets incorrectly installed will not withstand weathering and discolouration will result.

When used vertically, face the protected side of the sheet in the direction of the most intensive sunlight or exposure to weather.

If sealing is required at side or end laps, use Ampelite lap-seal tape, or sealone polycarbonate sealant. Incompatible sealants will weaken the sheeting and void the warranty.

Allowance needs to be made when drilling screw holes so that the sheet can move freely as it expands and contracts. Screw holes must have a minimum diameter of 10mm for sheet lengths up to 4.2m. Lengths over 4.2 require 12mm diameter holes.

Clearfix Drills and Oversizes All-in-One: An alternative method of fixing, which will also speed up installation, is to use a Clearfix combination drill/cutter and weather-proof seal assemblies. These fasteners self-drill and create a correct clearance hole in the sheet in one operation.

If cutting of the sheet is required, use a fine-tooth handsaw or a power saw fitted with a masonry type cut-off blade. Support the sheet close to where you are cutting. Ampelite sheeting can be custom-cut to length on order; your supplier can arrange this if required. It is good practice to wear protective goggles when cutting any material with a power tool.

To reduce noise caused by friction, due to expansion and contraction, we recommend using Ampelite Anti-noise tape, a 25mm x 3mm white self-adhesive tape, along the top of battens. Store Solasafe on a flat surface, in a dry area, avoiding contact with chemicals, paints, and solvents.

Cleaning and Maintenance

Peace of Mind Warranty

Solasafe profiled polycarbonate sheeting is warranted by Ampelite to give long service under normal usage. Protection against excessive yellowing of the sheet (as detailed in the Warranty) is for a lifetime from the date of purchase. Damage from heavy hail (up to 25mm in diameter in high winds) is covered for ten years.

Solasafe has achieved an Internal Surface Finish Group number of 1-S according to performance determined under the conditions described in ISO 9705:1993 required by NZBC clause C3.4(A).

Handy tips

You could try some practise holes using an off-cut or the part of a sheet that would be covered by ridging or flashings, etc. You may find it easier to drill the hole for the screw first and then enlarge this to 10mm for the washer.

Cleaning

Use only a soft brush and soapy water – no abrasives. To prevent possible staining, we recommend cleaning whenever bird soil is apparent.

1. Determine the volume of the building. (Fig. 1)
Volume of section A = 0.5 x L x W x Ha
Volume of section B = L x W x Hb
Total building volume = Volume of section A + Volume of section B
Note: For factories, the combined volume A + B should be used.

Where Volume B is air-conditioned, only Volume A is used to calculate the number of ventilators required. No air should be drawn from the air conditioner space.

Using ventilators in the ceiling space of air-conditioned buildings reduces the load on the air-conditioning plant and helps reduce power consumption.

2. Select the number of ventilators required:
METRIC = V x A/ch
EX/c x 3.6

Where:

V = volume of building or roof space
A/ch = air changes per hour
EX/c = Exhaust capacity of ventilator

Consideration should be given to the space occupied by stored goods or machinery. The adjustment to volume can reduce the number of vents required by up to 50%.

Wonderclad GC is a solid colour fibreglass sheet specifically designed for areas where corrosion resistance is vital. Correct installation is important
Ampelite sheeting shall be installed in accordance with Ampelite fixing instructions and with AS/NZS 1562.3:1996, Design and installation of sheet roof and wall cladding, Part 3: Plastic, the requirements of the NZ building code and the NZ Metal Roofing Manufactures Association Code of Practice.

Please note these additional important requirements

Ampelite translucent sheeting matching positive fixed profiles shall be installed using the fastening length applicable to the main cladding, together with a metal profile washer and EDPM seal. This combination gives a secure and weather tight finish. The fixing screws should not be over tightened to an extent that the sheet buckles, allowing water penetration at the seal or sheet overlap.
Fixing should be made at every crest at both ends of the sheet, and every second crest at intermediate purlins.
Where Ampelite fibreglass sheeting is in contact with safety mesh an Ampelite purlin protection strip must be installed over the safety mesh, to avoid fracturing of the underside of the sheet.
Where end lapping of the sheet is required a minimum of 300mm overlap is essential. Ampelite recommends the use of 25mm Lap
Seal Tape at the top and bottom edges of the purlin. This ensures the strips are concealed. For Decking profiles, two continuous beads of a clear non-hardening sealer (i.e. silicone), must be applied across the full width of the decking within the overlap.
IMPORTANT: Ampelite sheeting should be installed by pre-drilling oversize holes to allow for expansion and contraction. The basic calculation is 0.75mm per lin. /m, plus shank diameter of the screw. Do not over tighten screws. EXAMPLE: 10m sheet – 10 (m) x 0.75 (mm) + 4mm (fastener) = 11.5mm pre-drilled hole.
Clip Fixed Decking: Ampelite sheeting matching clip-fixed deck profiles shall be installed in conjunction with the main cladding and should be side lapped with overlaps on both sides (Ampelite sheets have 2 female laps). Fixing of sheets should be carried out in the same manner and practice as those stated for positive fixed profile roofing.
Wall Cladding: Pan fixing is required at each girt, and the use of Ampelite grey dome 22mm weather seals ensures a weather-tight seal. Over tightening or flattening the weather seal must be avoided. Fixing shall occur in every pan at both ends of the sheeting, and every other pan at intermediate grits.

Handling, Storage, & Disposal

Wonderclad GC Industrial Fibreglass Sheeting is a non-trafficable roofing material. The sheeting should always be stored in a dry and fire-safe area and handled with care to avoid damage to the surface coating as warranties will not apply to sheeting that has been damaged in handling or mechanical damage as a result of foot traffic.
Fibreglass sheeting is not recyclable and should be disposed of in a land fill. Do not incinerate fibreglass off-cuts as burning produces acrid smoke and noxious, toxic fumes.

Safety Data

There are no ill effects from handling Ampelite fibreglass sheets as a finished product. Some exposure to air-borne particles occurs on the drilling, cutting, and trimming of the material. Although there are no known cases of harmful effects, even after long-term exposure, it is recommended to take certain precautionary steps.

Eye Contact: Can cause irritation. Appropriate eye protection should be worn. If irritation occurs due to exposure to dust particles, wash eyes with running water using an eye bath or wash bottle. If irritation persists, seek medical attention.
Skin Contact: Can cause irritation. Shower thoroughly using soap and a cloth or sponge.
Inhalation: Dust masks are recommended, although particles are not respirable.
Ingestion: Non-toxic. Extensive studies have revealed no serious effects.

Dripguard Anti-Condensation Roofing System

Condensation forming on the underside of a single skinned skylight sheet is due to internal warm moist air meeting with a cold skylight surface and can diminish the benefits derived from installing skylights. Ampelite’s DripGuard provides a second translucent sheet that acts as a barrier to catch the drips of water from the underside of the top sheet, which then flows away down to the building’s gutter. DripGuard LR (low rib) uses 2 sheets of the same profile with a spacer between the middle of the sheets to create an air gap that allows condensation to drip down onto the bottom sheet.

DripGuard LR is compatible with most current roofing profiles such as Corrugated, Sixrib, 5rib, Styleline, Veedek, Plumbdek, Trimline, MC700, MC750, MC770, Metric, Windek, MC1000, Ribline 960, LT7.

DripGuard HR (high rib) is designed to be easily installed with most commercial roofing profiles. Two fibreglass roofing sheets of differing profile heights are installed one on top of the other creating an air gap that allows condensation to drip down onto the bottom sheet.

DripGuard HR is compatible with most current commercial roofing profiles such as DP955, BB900, Steelspan, Topspan, Muiltispan, ST900, Maxispan and MC930, Multi Rib and ST963.

Solasafe SS40 Group 1-S Industrial Polycarbonate sheeting shall be installed in accordance with Ampelite fixing instructions and AS/NZS 1562.3:1996, Design and installation of sheet roof and wall cladding, Part 3: Plastic, the requirements of the NZ Building Code and the NZ Metal Roofing Manufacturers’ Association Code of Practice.

Please note these additional important requirements
Solasafe SS40 Group 1-S Industrial Polycarbonate sheeting shall be installed using the fastening length applicable to the main roof. The sheeting must be installed by pre-drilling 12mm oversize holes to allow for expansion and contraction. The fixing screws shall be located in the centre of the rib and must not be overtightened to such an extent that the sheet buckles, allowing water penetration at the seal or sheet overlap. Fixing should be made at every crest at both ends of the sheet and at every crest at intermediate purlins and midspan supports if used. SS40 Group 1-S Industrial Polycarbonate sheeting shall only be installed using the unique SS40 Metal profiled washer along with an EPDM washer, which ensures the fixings remain watertight.

To ensure accuracy, Ampelite recommends the following:

Install screws into the SS40 sheeting in the same manner as metal.
When completed, remove fixings from the SS40 sheet.
Using the existing screw hole as a guide, re-drill, oversizing the hole.
Reinstall the fixing screw. (Note how the screw is centrally located in the hole.)
Do not over-tighten the screw putting undue pressure on the SS40 sheet.

Purlin Protection

Safety mesh must be incorporated under the SS40 Group 1-S Industrial Polycarbonate roof sheeting. Where the SS40 roof sheeting passes over safety mesh sitting on the supporting purlin, an SS40 profiled foam strip must be placed directly under the SS40 sheeting. This profile strip will protect the SS40 from damage and support the profile when fastened.

Side Laps

SS40 Group 1-S Industrial Polycarbonate sheeting has its own profile with an effective cover of 1000 mm, which will side-lap with most 40 mm steel profiles commonly sold in NZ. The metal roof sheets will need to be laid with accurate spacings left for the skylights. Each individual SS40 1-S Industrial Polycarbonate sheet is manufactured to overlap and be supported by the adjacent roof or wall cladding. A 25 mmx5 mm compressive foam tape will need to be applied at the side-laps between the steel and SS40 sheeting.

End Laps

All end laps must have a minimum of 300 mm overlap. A polycarbonate compatible sealant must be used and Ampelite recommends that a bead of sealant is used at both the top and bottom of the fastening point. This should be a co-polymer sealant specifically formulated for use with polycarbonate. Incompatible sealants will weaken the sheeting and the use of these will void the warranty. End lapping should only be applied to roofs with a minimum pitch of three degrees.

Mid Span Supports

Where a single sheet of SS40 Group 1-S Industrial Polycarbonate is to be used as a skylight, and thus placed between metal roof sheets, the mid-span support will allow the SS40 sheet to be installed on Purlin spacings that exceed Ampelite’s maximum span limitations for the sheet. Where two or more SS40 sheets are laid side by side, purlin spacings must be reduced to suit the maximum span stated in the Ampelite spanning chart.

Sealing at Flashings

The use of end-stops is required to prevent wind-driven water from running past the flashing and into the building. Typically, a metal angle is folded and a polycarbonate-compatible sealant is then applied where the SS40 Group 1-S Industrial Polycarbonate sheet meets the metal angle

Alternatively, a closed foam strip matching the SS40 profile sheeting can be bonded to the pans or valleys of the sheet with a polycarbonate compatible sealant. Ideally, the strip should be fitted at least 100 mm behind the turn-down of the flashing.

Wall Cladding

Pan fixing is required at each girt, and the use of Ampelite grey dome 22 mm weather seals will ensure the cladding is weather-tight. Over-tightening or flattening of the weather seals must be avoided. Fixing must occur in every pan at both ends of the sheeting, and in every other pan at intermediate girts.

End Closure Strip

Foam-filler strip is available to suit most profiles and should be installed at the ends of the SS40 Group 1-S Industrial Polycarbonate sheets, to keep out dirt, birds and vermin.

Cutting

Should the SS40 Group 1-S Industrial Polycarbonate sheeting need to be cut on-site, the use of a circular saw with a small tooth blade suitable for plastic sheeting is recommended. Care should be taken to achieve a cut with minimal damage to the sheet.

Storage

SS40 Group 1-S Industrial Polycarbonate sheeting should always be stored in a dry and fire-safe area. Do not store heavy materials on top of sheets, as they may fracture.

Recycling and Disposal

Solasafe SS40 Group 1-S Industrial Polycarbonate is recyclable and can be disposed of in a landfill.

Non-trafficable

Ampelite translucent sheeting is a non-trafficable material, Ampelite Webglas sheeting should be installed where foot traffic is required. Sheets should be handled with care to avoid damage to the surface coating. Guarantees will not apply to sheeting that has been mechanical damaged as a result of foot traffic.

SL Group3 – Bromine Free Fire Retardant Sheeting

Ampelite announces the next generation of SL Group 3 Fire Retardant sheeting with a ‘Bromine Free’ formulation. To meet the Internal Surface Performance requirements of the New Zealand Building Code, Ampelite’s SL Fire Retardant sheeting was originally manufactured from a fire retardant resin that used a chemical called Bromine. Bromine is a very good fire retardant, however it can change colour and become a yellowish-brown colour when exposed to UV and heat. A substantial amount of Research and Development work has been undertaken to achieve a Group 3 rating without the use of Bromine.

Ampelite translucent sheeting matching positive fixed profiles shall be installed using the fastening length applicable to the main cladding, together with a metal profile washer and EDPM seal. This combination creates a secure and weather-tight finish. The fixing screws should not be over-tightened to the extent that the sheet buckles, allowing water penetration at the seal or sheet overlap.
Fixing should be made at every crest at both ends of the sheet and at every second crest at intermediate purlins.
Where Ampelite fibreglass sheeting is in contact with safety mesh, an Ampelite purlin protection strip must be installed over the safety mesh to avoid fracturing of the underside of the sheet.
Where end-lapping of the sheet is required, a minimum of 300mm overlap is essential. Ampelite recommends the use of 25mm Lap Seal Tape at the top and bottom edges of the purlin. This ensures the strips are concealed. For Decking profiles, two continuous beads of a clear non-hardening sealer (i.e. silicone), must be applied across the full width of the decking within the overlap.
IMPORTANT: Ampelite sheeting should be installed by pre-drilling oversize holes to allow for expansion and contraction. The basic calculation is 0.75mm per lin. /m, plus shank diameter of the screw. Do not over-tighten screws. EXAMPLE: 10 m sheet – 10 (m) x 0.75 (mm) + 4mm (fastener) = 11.5 mm pre-drilled hole.

Superior Features of Cool-lite IR

Light transmission is maintained. Loss of light transmission after 10 years is just 10%, compared to a loss of 30% for standard surface film protected fibreglass sheeting. Cool-lite IR has a highly UV-resistant gel coat of 100 microns.
Very high resistance to yellowing and discolouration. Over 10 years, changes are negligible and are covered by warranty. Only minor changes may occur in later years.
Surface erosion (fibre show) is eliminated. It is covered by a 25-year warranty.
Low surface erosion. This also improves weathering properties. The 100micron gel-coated surface provides an impenetrable barrier and the sheet is warranted against water penetration for 25 years. Inbuilt UV protection eliminates 99% of harmful UV Rays.

What you need to know about light

We see things every day, from the moment we get up in the morning until we go to sleep at night. We look at everything around us using visible light. ULTRAVIOLET WAVES: There are three types of ultraviolet: UV-A, UV-B, and UV-C. UV-A causes skin ageing and wrinkles, and can also damage outdoor plastics and paint. UV-B is harmful to us and other life forms. UV-B causes sunburn and skin cancer and also reduces the growth of plants. UV-C, which is even stronger than UV-B, never reaches the earth’s surface because it is filtered out by the atmosphere.

VISIBLE LIGHT WAVES: We see visible light waves as the colours of the rainbow. Each colour has a different wavelength. Red has the longest wavelength and violet has the shortest wavelength. When all the waves are seen together, they make white light. Cones in our eyes are the receivers for these tiny visible light waves. The sun is a natural source of visible light waves and our eyes see the reflection of this sunlight off the objects around us.

INFRA-RED WAVES: Infra-red waves are thermal. In other words, we experience this type of infra-red radiation every day in the form of heat – the heat that we feel from sunlight, which is the solar energy from the sun being transmitted by the infra-red waves.

How Cool-lite IR works

Cool-lite IR filters out 99% of harmful ultraviolet radiation and allows a high level of the visible light spectrum to be transmitted into your building so colours appear brighter and clearer, while at the same time reflecting out a large percentage of the infra-red waves, reducing heat so your building stays cooler.

Cool-lte IR now uses Ampelite’s Proprietary SL Group 3 ‘Bromine Free’ Fire Retardant Resin System

Coolite IR is manufactured using Ampelite’s Proprietary SL Group 3 ‘Bromine Free’ Fire Retardant Resin System. Surface Finish Properties have been tested to ISO 5660 and achieved a group number 3 performance in accordance with NZBC Verification Method C/VM2 Appendix.

Selectivity Index
The ability of sheeting to select between light and heat can be measured by dividing the Total Visible Light Transmission by the Total Solar Transmission; this is called the Selectivity Index. The chart below shows the difference in the Selectivity Index for the two grades of Cool-lite IR when compared to Clear and Opal sheets. As you can see, Cool-lite IR IV is 28% more selective than normal clear sheeting and Cool-lite IR VIII is 36% more selective than Opal.

Cool-lite IR IV is recommended for factories and warehouses where a high level of light transmission is required and would be used instead of Clear sheeting, whereas Cool-lite IR VIII is recommended where lower heat levels are needed and would replace Opal sheeting.

Energy savings benefits can now be calculated against your building design
Ampelite can supply scientific testing conducted by Vipac Engineers and Scientists Ltd. NATA-approved laboratory that proves the effectiveness of Cool-lite IR sheeting in providing high levels of visible light while controlling heat transmission. This test information can be used to help you model your expected energy usage. Shading and heat transfer co-efficient information can be used along with building design, climate and heating/cooling equipment. Ampelite has developed a calculation tool to estimate energy savings as a function of several of those variables. Please note these additional important requirements

Ampelite translucent sheeting matching positive fixed profiles shall be installed using the fastening length applicable to the main cladding, together with a metal profile washer and EDPM seal. This combination creates a secure and weather-tight finish. The fixing screws should not be over-tightened to the extent that the sheet buckles, allowing water penetration at the seal or sheet overlap.
Fixing should be made at every crest at both ends of the sheet and at every second crest at intermediate purlins.
Where Ampelite fibreglass sheeting is in contact with safety mesh, an Ampelite purlin protection strip must be installed over the safety mesh to avoid fracturing of the underside of the sheet.
Where end-lapping of the sheet is required, a minimum of 300 mm overlap is essential. Ampelite recommends the use of 25 mm Lap Seal Tape at the top and bottom edges of the purlin. This ensures the strips are concealed. For Decking profiles, two continuous beads of a clear non-hardening sealer (i.e. silicone), must be applied across the full width of the decking within the overlap.
IMPORTANT: Ampelite sheeting should be installed by pre-drilling oversize holes to allow for expansion and contraction. The basic calculation is 0.75 mm per lin. /m, plus shank diameter of the screw. Do not over-tighten screws. EXAMPLE: 10 m sheet – 10 (m) x 0.75 (mm) + 4 mm (fastener) = 11.5 mm pre-drilled hole.
CLIP-FIXED DECKING: Ampelite sheeting matching clip-fixed deck profiles shall be installed in conjunction with the main cladding and should be side lapped with overlaps on both sides (Ampelite sheets have two female laps). Fixing of sheets should be carried out in the same manner and practice as those stated for positive fixed profile roofing.
WALL CLADDING: Pan fixing is required at each girt, and the use of Ampelite grey dome 22 mm weather seals ensures a weather-tight seal. Over-tightening or flattening the weather seal must be avoided. Fixing shall occur in every pan at both ends of the sheeting, and at every other pan at intermediate girts.
CYCLONE ZONE INSTALLATION: Installation in cyclone-prone areas follows the recommendations and code for normal fixing, but further specific requirements must be met. Please contact your local Ampelite office for the latest information.

Handling, Storage, & Disposal

Cool-lite IR S-996 industrial fibreglass sheeting is a non-trafficable roofing material. It should always be stored in a dry and fire-safe area and handled with care to avoid damage to the surface coating. Warranties will not apply to sheeting that has been damaged in handling or has mechanical damage as a result of foot traffic.

Fibreglass sheeting is not recyclable and should be disposed of in a landfill. Do not incinerate fibreglass off-cuts as burning produces acrid smoke and noxious, toxic fumes.

Safety Data

Eye Contact: Can cause irritation. Appropriate eye protection should be worn. If irritation occurs due to exposure to dust particles, wash eyes with running water using an eye bath or wash bottle. If irritation persists, seek medical attention.
Skin Contact: Can cause irritation. Shower thoroughly using soap and a cloth or sponge.
Inhalation: Dust masks are recommended, although particles are not respirable.
Ingestion: Non-toxic. Extensive studies have revealed no serious effects.
